IN 1890 Yosemite was declared a national park for its granite cliffs, waterfalls, sequoias groves and the animals that live there. Yosemite is in central California and has almost 4 million visitors a year.
Josiah Whitney and John Muir had large a disagreement on how the park was formed. Josiah thought that it was created by faulting, while John thought that it was formed by glaciers. But John was right
. Yosemite Valley had been greatly modified by a series of glaciers.
Valley glaciers descended into the preexisting river canyons. The glaciers straightened, widened and deepened the river valleys, causing Yosemite Lake to form. Sediments filled the lake, forming the valley floor.
